Welcome. ^^
In 1998, my life was changed by a friend's birthday gift to me. It was an anime fansub tape that he wanted me to see, since it contained one of his favorite anime. So one perfect Friday night, I loaded in the tape in my VCR, watched, and was instantly captivated.
Since you've come to this page, you likely already know Zetsuai 1989, and are familiar with the shounenai genre of shoujo manga. But for those who might have stumbled in, I should warn you. If the idea of romance and love between two men makes you uncomfortable, you should stop here and visit someone else's site. That said....
These manga scanlations were done for completely personal reasons. I adore this story and the main character, Kouji-sama. I own the original five Zetsuai manga tankoubons (volumes), and I just had to know exactly what everyone was saying. To do this required more than a simple read-through on my part, I needed to translate everything. In the process of rendering Kouji-sama into English, I decided I might as well share my efforts with others who also love these characters, and who would also like to know the original manga story. Hence, this page was created.
But first, you should be warned that I am not a professional translator. In fact, I've never taken a class in Japanese language, and I've never even spoken to a Japanese person in their native tongue. I am an anime fan who decided to learn the language of her passion. I began to teach myself in 1999, and continue to this day. I am trying my utmost to do justice to Kouji, but I am sure I will err on a regular basis in these scanlations. Please forgive my humble mistakes. *bow*
No doubt, the Zetsuai manga has been translated by others, and their work has been posted on somewhere on the net. I have never viewed anyone else's version of Zetsuai manga translations. These pages were translated by me, Sailor Two Moons, with occasional help from my translation sempai, Andrew-kun. As a side note, he has absolutely no taste for shounenai. Bunny girls and women in sensual Chinese dresses are more his style, but he graciously helps me anyway. ^^
These scanlations are done in the fansubbing style. Occasional terms are left untranslated, names are given family name first (Nanjou Kouji instead of Kouji Nanjou), and name suffixes are retained. (Kouji-sama instead of Most Beloved and Exaulted Mr. Kouji.) Any untranslated words will be explained in liner notes at the bottom of each page, as well as interesting facts or tidbits of information that I want to point out or share.
If you have never heard of a "scanlation", allow me to define the term. A "scanlation" is when the original page of manga was scanned, and the Japanese text edited out and replaced with an English translation using an image editing program like Photoshop. Scanlations can be controversial in the anime and manga community, as they allow viewers to understand what is being said AND to see the actual art, all without purchasing the original books for themselves. For this reason, I have tried to make these scanlations as hard to download as I can. I am not out to steal money from the original creator, Ozaki Minami, I am sharing her work as a testament to my devotion. She has created a wonderful story in Zetsuai 1989, and I urge everyone who enjoys Kouji and what I have done here to buy their own copies of the original manga. It is easy to find in online manga stores, and all five volumes frequently show up on ebay for perfectly reasonable prices. I imported mine as a used set for $20 from Japan. ^^
Every scanned page has text over the image. The text consists of two parts:
"Zetsuai 1989 by Ozaki Minami vol# p# ~ ISBN number"
"fan translation by slr2moons@hotmail.com"The first line tells you exactly where the image is from, including the name of the mangaka, and even the tankoubon's ISBN number. This way, you have everything you need to order the book for yourself. The second line makes sure you know that this is a fan-produced work, is unlicensed, and gives my email address.
I do not know how much of Kouji's manga I will actually finish. I want to complete all five books for myself, and I will do so. But I work very slowly in my spare time. At this point, I am uncertain if I will post everything I complete, but I hope I can. :D
Please do not post this site's URL to any mailing lists, nor submit it to any search engines or link colletion sites like the Anime Web Turnpike. I want this site to remain as unfamous as possible. The fastest way for this work to vanish from the net would be the threat of legal action from the publisher. Yes, it HAS happened before with scanlations pages, though luckily not yet my own. And the less advertised this site is, the longer it will last. You can tell your friends, you can link to it from your own site, but please keep it on a small scale. Onegai shimasu!
Of course, should the Zetsuai 1989 manga ever be licensed for commercial release in North America, these scanlations will be taken down in deference to the legal translation. But I don't think mainstream America is yet ready for Kouji-sama, so he shall remain unsullied for that much longer. :) Of course, if you are the copyright holder and wish for me to remove these scans, please let me know.
Enough from me, ne? Enjoy reading Kouji-sama with my blessings. I certainly do. *^^* Best regards, slr2moons@hotmail.com
