Notes:
1. "Kyaa!" This is Japanese for a cute scream. I decided that I will no longer translate "kya" and "wai", since I have been unable to find English equivalents that I think are good enough. You'll be seeing them pretty often from now on, I imagine. ^^
2. "Their clan army, Guren no Nanjou--the Blazing Red Lotus of Nanjou--was extremely rash. Battles led by their effective captain were excessive, but they managed not to break apart." I intentionally left those lines sounding like awkward, obvious translations. It was partially because of Izumi's reaction--it's supposed to be unusual--but mostly due to the fact I couldn't figure out a "smoother" way to say it in English. I'm not 100%, but I believe the two gossips are referring to the Nanjou Army during Japan's civil war period, which was 1467-1560. The only fact that makes me unsure about this is the shape of that flag. Traditional Japanese war flags are vertical, and attatched to poles down one side and across the top. What we have here is a western-style flag. I've never heard of war flags used in WWII or any earlier moden-day wars Japan might have participated in, and if they were, then I would imagine the gossips would talk about Kouji's grandfather or something. Hmmm.
2 continued. I think it worthy of mentioning that the second sentence, "Battles led by their effective captain were excessive, but they managed not to break apart," could mean several different things. Namely, that the captain was so strong, well-liked, or vicious that he was never abandoned, overthrown, or lost all his troops to death. We don't know which. ^^
2 once more. For posterity, here's the original Japanese of those two lines: "'Guren no Nanjou' tte, yuttara, yatara sugokute. Tokkou taichou de kenka wa mecha tsuyoi shi, tonikaku, hanpa ja nakatta te." If you can help, any assistance is appreciated. :)
